With all the monumental decisions of the Supreme Court last week, it may be easy to forget the politician who as a governor led his state to be first in the nation to authorize same-sex marriages and also to establish universal health care: Mitt Romney of Massachusetts.
In 2004, after years of proposals and counterproposals, Gov. Romney compromised with the state Legislature and permitted same-sex couples to be legally married in his state.
